Click vs. Glue-Down Luxury Vinyl Flooring
Luxury vinyl is available in several installation formats, but click-lock rigid core and glue-down luxury vinyl are two of the most common choices. Each has different advantages, and the best option depends on your subfloor, room layout, installation area, and the specific flooring product.
Click-Lock / Rigid Core Luxury Vinyl
Floating installation
Click-lock luxury vinyl is installed as a floating floor. The planks lock together rather than being glued directly to the subfloor, making rigid core flooring a popular choice for residential renovations and many condo applications.
Depending on the product, rigid core luxury vinyl can often be installed over existing hard flooring and may help reduce the amount of subfloor preparation required. Many products also include an attached acoustic backing.
- Fast floating-floor installation
- No full-spread adhesive required
- Often suitable over existing hard floors
- Rigid construction can help conceal minor subfloor imperfections
- Many products include acoustic backing
Glue-Down Luxury Vinyl
Direct-to-subfloor installation
Glue-down luxury vinyl is bonded directly to a properly prepared subfloor. Because each plank or tile is individually adhered, it creates a stable floor that works especially well across large or continuous areas.
Glue-down flooring also provides greater freedom for custom layouts, borders, patterns, and combinations of different plank or tile designs. Individual pieces can often be replaced without removing a large section of flooring.
- Stable, direct-to-subfloor installation
- Ideal for large and continuous flooring areas
- No floating-floor expansion gap for many products
- Greater flexibility for custom layouts and patterns
- Individual planks or tiles can be replaced

With the appearance of a high-end wood product, it shines in spaces where you want to impress. How are luxury vinyl planks installed?
There are three methods for installing luxury vinyl products:
We carry extensive colour and style options for all three types.
Which is the most popular luxury vinyl type?
Click-lock rigid core luxury vinyl is currently the most popular installation format industry-wide. It is popular because the planks lock together without full-spread adhesive and installation is generally faster and less disruptive. Glue-down luxury vinyl remains an excellent choice for large continuous spaces, custom layouts, and projects where maximum design flexibility is important.
What are the advantages of glue-down luxury vinyl installation?
Glue-down luxury vinyl planks will never develop gaps. They remain seamless throughout their lifetime even when the humidity and temperature fluctuate in your home. In addition, they can be installed as a continuous flooring across rooms and hallways without the need for transition pieces.
How does loose-lay installation compare to glue-down?
Loose-lay luxury vinyl uses a friction-grip backing and generally does not require full-spread adhesive. Depending on the product, room size, traffic level, and installation conditions, adhesive or tackifier may be required in specific areas.
Like glue-down flooring, loose-lay can work well in large continuous spaces and offers more flexibility for replacing individual planks than a traditional floating click floor.
Are there limitations to click-lock luxury vinyl flooring?
Because click-lock luxury vinyl is installed as a floating floor, it must be able to expand and contract as a complete floor system. Expansion gaps are therefore required around the perimeter and fixed objects, and transition mouldings may be required between rooms or across larger installations.
The maximum permitted continuous floor dimensions vary by manufacturer and product, so we check the installation requirements for the specific luxury vinyl floor you select.
